What Would You Like to Know?

When is Chestnut Season?

Chestnut season usually runs from March to April every year, however depending on the weather and season or just how the chestnuts are feeling, they could ripen later. We will open the season Good Friday, March 29th 2024. Please note that on Easter Sunday we are closed.

What are your opening hours?

We are open weekends from 10am-4pm. Whilst we do our best to ensure the hours are honored, The Souther Highlands can be faced with unpredictable weather, so at times we may regretfully have to close for your safety. We advise you always to check into our website or social media sites for the latest updates on opening hours.

What should I bring?

As we are a farm please come prepared for all kinds of weather. Sometimes we get 4 seasons in one day! We advise you to bring the following:

  • Sturdy enclosed shoes as Chestnuts have sharp husks that can easily penetrate fabric. We advise you wear gum boots.

  • Canvas gloves, you can bring your own or we have gloves for sale at the farm

  • Warm clothes as The Southern Highlands can get cold and windy

  • Water bottles - you will do a lot of fresh air walking on our farm and staying hydrated is important

  • Lunch, drinks and snacks - there is a picnic area also available for customers to use

Where are you located?

Our address is 701 Bumballa Road, Wingello NSW 2579.

Do I need to book?

There is no need to book if arriving by car. If you want to come on a bus with a large party, bookings are required. Please email us for more details and to ensure that your function runs smoothly.

Can I bring children and pets?

Of course! In fact, we guarantee your kids and furry friends will have the best time ever. However please be aware that chestnuts are prickly, and kids should always wear gloves and be supervised closely by adults. If you have curious dogs that like to make new friends, please be mindful that not everyone feels comfortable around dogs and if necessary, a leash maybe required. We also welcome grandparents however please note we have limited facilities that caters for the elderly. If you have any specific questions relating to special needs, please email us as we try our best to ensure the whole family can enjoy our farm.

What kind of Chestnuts do you grow?

 Marone
This is perhaps the most popular nut of all time with large deep red nuts that are very sweet and easy to peel. It is very effected by the supply of water during bud swell time (January). So, if we have a good January rainfall, this nut will excel during harvest time. The nuts tend to fall in the husk, so caution is required when pulling them out.
Harvest Time: 25th March – 7th April.

Prolific
This is a Flemings tree and has very good quality nuts – medium size, light brown and good eating, easy peeling and excellent for roastingt. It is one of the main stays of the property, being the first chestnut trees that were planted.
Harvest Time: 25th March – 7th April.

What facilities do you have on the property?

We have basic facilities available including toilets, parking on site, drinks for sale, chestnut roaster and a picnic area.
